Exporting my Medium content to a self hosted WordPress installation

After a long time separating out my humanities and lifestyle blogging from my technical blogging, I’m transitioning my Medium over to this blog permanently to have a unified polymathic single stop shop for thoughts.

This process was a bit cumbersome to discover, as the AIs and many threads claimed there was a plugin or native import tool available where there was none. However, I got it done, and it is easy, although non-obvious, as of Spring 2025.

  1. In Medium: Export your Medium content. Mine was from corbett.medium.com. Go to Settings->Security and Apps->Download your information. Check your email for a link to download a zip.
  2. On WordPress.com: Create a new dummy blog. I called my corbettmedium.wordpress.com.
  3. On WordPress.com dummy blog: Go to Dashboard->Tools->Import->Medium and select your downloaded zip. Then export your blog to get it in WordPress xml format by going to Dashboard->Tools->Export->All Content
  4. On your self hosted WordPress.org site: Mine is codexgalactic.com. Import your Medium content by going to Dashboard->Tools->Import->WordPress Run Importer. Select the XML
  5. Cleanup on WordPress.com: Go to Sites->dummy blog (corbettmedium.wordpress.com) Hamburger Menu (three dots)->Delete Site

Voila! You are done. Now that I’ve migrated, check out the backlog of content available here. Some of my top posts from Medium now available here are:
